What’s Happening in the Digital World?

Internet Explorer Set to Retire – For anyone born in the 90s, there’s a good chance your first web browser was Internet Explorer. Other than providing a nostalgia hit, Internet Explorer had been the default web browser for Microsoft PC’s for over two decades, however, it has always been riddled with bugs and faults which eventually led to people using it solely to download a superior web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. After pushing PC users towards the relatively new Edge browser, Microsoft has finally announced its decision to discontinue Internet Explorer, and it will be no longer supported as of the 15th of June 2022.

Instagram Add Pronouns Feature – Following the steps of other social media platforms, Instagram have added the option for users to be able to add their gender identity to their bios. There is now a dedicated section where users can choose from a list of pronouns or request to add their own specific ones. The feature has only been launched in some countries, however, Instagram plan to roll it out in many others in the future.

Flawless Deep Fakes Could be Used for Movie Dubs – If you’re an internet fanatic, you’ll have likely seen the ‘deep fake’ videos floating around. UK based start-up Flawless are planning on taking the innovative technology to the next level and are aiming to use it as a tool for dubbing films and TV shows into foreign languages. The idea is certainly an interesting one, and it could potentially find an ideal solution to messages getting lost in translation through subtitles, as well as giving certain films and TV shows a wider audience.

Viral Story of the Week

YouTuber JaackMate, who has over 1.4m subscribers on the streaming platform, has hidden golden tickets in cities around the UK that are valued at up to £10,000. The YouTube star launched the video on the 19th of May, and it has taken the internet by storm. #JaackMaatesGoldenTicket has been trending on social media platforms, and hundreds of people stormed the locations where Jaack announced he would be hiding the tickets.
